Information on the Focus study “Top Employer Medium-Sized Businesses”

On behalf of FOCUS- Business, FactField GmbH conducted a large-scale survey among employees in Germany, which will be the main component of the data collection starting this year. The survey was distributed through various channels in order to reach as many companies in Germany with at least 11 employees as possible. The survey identifies the top medium-sized employers based in Germany.

What criteria were taken into account?

Company size, employee ratings from a Germany-wide online survey, and existing online ratings of employers. Survey period: 01.03.2021 to 02.05.2021.

Deadline for data collection of online evaluations: 21.03.2021.

How are the results presented?

In 40 industry lists from around 4000 employers and a top 100 list across all industries.

1. STEP: SELECTION CRITERIA

To be included in the evaluation, companies had to meet certain criteria across both data sources (survey and online):

The company has:

A rating average of at least 3.5 (scale of 1 to 5).
At least 10 company ratings from employees across all survey channels.
Of these, at least 5 ratings since 01.01.2020.
a location in Germany and employs between eleven and 500 employees.

2. STEP: THE 4000 TOP MEDIUM-SIZED EMPLOYERS

A score between 100 and 200 was calculated for each employer based on two factors: the rating average and the number of all ratings received.

To ensure that companies with many employees (who can provide more ratings) are not automatically better off than companies with fewer employees, all employers were sorted into size groups (based on their number of employees) and finally compared and rated with the companies from their reference group. The point values generated within the groups were determined based on their respective minimum and maximum scores. The approximately 4000 employers with the best point values across all groups make it into the ranking.
